Immeasurable Blessings

Every November my theme for blogs is giving thanks. One of my favorite songs of all time is "Counting My Blessings" by Matt Maher and Seph Schlueter. The words are so perfect for this season (that often gets skipped over) being between Halloween and Christmas. That's why I use the entire month of November to focus on my blessings.

When Paul wrote his letter to the church at Ephesus he started by praising God for the spiritual blessings He has given us through Jesus Christ.

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ , who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ," (Ephesians 1:3 NIV).

I don't think I've ever used those words when I pray. My study Bible offers an interpretation. It says, "that in Christ we have all the benefits of knowing God--being chosen for salvation, being adopted as his children, forgiveness, insight, the gifts of the Spirit, power to do God's will, the hope of living forever with Christ. Because we have an intimate relationship with Christ, we can enjoy these blessings now. The heavenly realms means that these blessings are eternal, not temporal."

If you stayed with me long enough to read that whole comment, you realize how massive our blessings really are! How often do I praise God for all of the blessings Christ gave me-because I first believed? That is a lot of powerful blessings. The words of the song below express that feeling of immeasurable blessings.

Counting My Blessings

by Matt Maher and Seph Schlueter

It's like it was yesterday

I was a praying for a miracle

Scared to have a little hope

And now looking back today

Seeing all the things You've done

I can't even add them up

One, two, three up to infinity

I'd run out of numbers

Before I could thank You for everything

God, I'm still counting my blessings

For all that You've done in my life

The more that I look in the details

The more of Your goodness I find

Father on this side of heaven

I know that I'll run out of time

But I will keep counting my blessings

Knowing I can't count that high

And I know that seasons never last forever

So, God I will remember all of the reasons

My heart has to be grateful

All the times You've been faithful to me

God, I'm still counting my blessings

For all that You've done in my life

The more that I look in the details

The more of Your goodness I find

Father on this side of heaven

I know that I'll run out of time

But I will keep counting my blessings

Knowing I can't count that high

Oh, I can't count that high

High, oh, high

Oh, Your goodness, Your goodness

One, two, three up to infinity

I'd run out of numbers

Before I could thank You for everything

God, I'm still counting my blessings

For all that You've done in my life

The more that I look in the details (the details)

The more of Your goodness I find

Father on this side of heaven

I know that I'll run out of time

But I will keep counting my blessings

Knowing I can't count that high

I will keep counting my blessings

Knowing I can't count that high

O, Heavenly Father, thank you for the countless blessings You have given me through Your Son. I can never express enough thanks to even put a dent in all my blessings. You alone are so good -- beyond what my mind can grasp. Thank You, God. "I will keep counting my blessings", though I know "I'll run out of time" here on earth, and that "I can't count that high"!  AMEN.
