A Life of Service

It breaks my heart that we lost so many great leaders to assassins in America. I remember the day President Kennedy was shot. The images of his motorcade replay in my memories. Likewise, I can hear Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech in his booming, yet gentle voice, in my mind. What a great man.

"Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."  by Martin Luther King, Jr., 1968.

Jesus was also assassinated by his own people.

Jesus said, "Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave--just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many," (Matthew 20:26-28 NIV).

Today I am remembering a life of true service. Not just those great men who have gone before us serving others and dying in their service, but remembering that my life is also to be lived in service of others. I fall so short of this command.

Lord God, You who oversee us all, help me live my life in service to others. Show me what I need to do and where I can be of service. Mold me. Shape me. Use me, Lord I pray. I place my life in Your hands for the service You have planned for me. In Jesus' Name I pray. Amen.
